I have always loved the month of January as it is the start of a fresh year with new beginnings, and everyone is in a positive mood with exciting goals to aspire towards. However, my favourite part is that all of the TV shows that have been on hiatus since December are finally back! See below for five new 2017 TV series that are on my must-watch list as well as the premiere dates and times for my favourite returning shows!
BRAND NEW SHOWS!
1) A Series of Unfortunate Events – Netflix – FRI JAN 13 @ 12pm
For those of you who don’t know, Jim Carrey was a HUGE part of my childhood as I watched all of his films over and over again. Therefore, the film version of A Series of Unfortunate Events will always have a special place in my heart as Carrey plays the evil role of Count Olaf. The initial season will follow the storyline of the first four books, as three young orphans struggle to uncover the dark secrets of their family history as they bounce between guardians. I’m excited that they are revisiting this beloved children’s novel series and are converting it to TV with Neil Patrick Harris taking over where Carrey left off.
2) Frontier – Netflix – FRI JAN 20 @ 12pm
Frontier is a historical drama series that follows a crew struggling to gain control of the North American fur trade in the 1700s. Jason Momoa, a.k.a. Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones, takes on the lead role of part-Irish, part-Native American outlaw Harp who is working against the stronghold the Hudson’s Bay Company has on the 18th Century Canadian fur trade.
3) Training Day – CBS – THURS FEB 2 @ 10pm
Training Day is a crime thriller TV series with a storyline that occurs 15 years after the events of the film of the same name that starred Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke as Los Angeles narcotics officers. The TV series features new comer Justin Cornwell in the role of rookie Police Officer Kyle Craig, as he becomes partners with the veteran Detective Frank Roarke played by Bill Paxton. I’m excited to see how the series will uncover Detective Roarke’s shady side missions as well as how Officer Craig will choose to either embrace or defy them.
4) Big Little Lies – HBO – SUN FEB 19 @ 9pm
Big Little Lies is a drama mini-series based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriaty, featuring Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman in the lead roles of three mothers. The story follows the trio as they become close friends once Woodley’s character moves into the neighbour. However, as the story continues the perfect image the women present to the public begins to shatter and someone is murdered in the process.
5) Taken – NBC – MON FEB 27 @ 10pm
Taken is an action series that is set as a prequel to the events of the Taken trilogy that starred Liam Neeson as former CIA agent Bryan Mills. I absolutely love Liam Neeson and I enjoyed the trilogy so I’m eager to see what Clive Standen, a.k.a. Rollo from Vikings, brings to the role of the younger Bryan Mills. The story follows Mills as he works to move on after a tragic incident and his plans to seek revenge.
