FILM IN REVIEW: Focus (2015)

Focus (2015) – 7.0/10 IMDb

As mentioned in last month’s “In Theatres” segment, Focus was on my list of films that I was excited to be released in February. This week I finally went to see Will Smith and Margot Robbie in action and I absolutely loved their performance!

Focus

Focus is a romantic-comedy that follows veteran conman Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) as he teaches the stunning Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie) the tricks of his trade. Nicky Spurgeon is a charming yet equally devious character as he shows Jess what it takes to be successful in the world of pick pocketing, betting, and manipulation. The chemistry between Nick and Jess is full of flirtation, amusement, and a ton of surprises.

The most important rule that Nicky teaches Jess is to “never lose focus” during a con. I loved trying to keep up with what was true and what was a false reality, as well as getting a behind the scenes view of a group of con artists. As an audience we are continuously blindsided with the twists and turns of what is going on in the current con, and I loved every minute of it.

Focus Will Smith & Margot Robbie

Now is the moment that I am going to point out that Margot Robbie was 100% the best part of Focus, and the real reason why you should go and buy a ticket. I had stated earlier that I was excited to see how Margot would perform, as I loved her as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf Of Wall Street, and she did not disappoint. She began the film as a fresh faced up-and-comer trying to learn everything she can about the con artist industry. As the movie progressed the student became the master as she elevated to become a true femme fatale by the end of the film.

I also wanted to note that Margot Robbie was the best part of the film for me not only because of her acting, but also because of the stunning fashion she wore throughout the film. I wanted to include a couple of my favourite pieces as a shoutout the film’s costume designer Dayna Pink and a sneak peek to intrigue you to go see them all for yourself.

Bonus: I personally love the interviews that take place when actors and actresses are promoting their films. If you are like me, check out the link below for an unscripted interview of Margot and Will about the film!
