IN THEATRES: April & May (2016)

Today’s “In Theatres” post is a combination edition that highlights the best films released in April and the exciting films coming soon to the big screen in May! As usual, I have chosen to feature three films that I am eager to go and see in the coming month, as well as a list of extras if my choices aren’t your style.

1) The Huntsman: Winter’s War – In Theatres Friday April 22

I remember being very excited to see Snow White and the Huntsman when it released back in 2012. However, I came out of the theatre feeling like Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna were the true stars. Therefore, I got extremely excited when I found out that another film would be released without Snow White in order to solely focus on the other two characters. Also, I’m eager to see how the additions of Emily Blunt as Queen Freya and Jessica Chastain as the Warrior will work into the overall story.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a fantasy action film that is set as the prequel/sequel to the 2012 Snow White and the Huntsman film, as it takes place both before and after the events of the original film. The film centres upon the war between Queen Ravenna and her sister Queen Freya as a result of Ravenna’s betrayal of her sister. Queen Freya isolates herself in the North and raises an army to exact revenge upon her sister. The Huntsman, Warrior, and Freya all come together to overthrow Ravenna’s evil reign.

2) Captain America: Civil War – In Theatres Friday May 6

As mentioned in the recent “Tuesday Top 10: Heroes” post, I am very anxious and excited to go see Captain America: Civil War. The film is set a year after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and centres upon a crucial divide amongst the Avengers resulting in each member having to choose either Cap’s or Tony’s side. As noted in several previous CCC posts I am a HUGE Marvel fan, so my heart hurts that the team is in conflict but I’m eager to see how it is hopefully resolved in the end. Also, I’m very intrigued by the new character of the Black Panther played by Chadwick Boseman as well as Tom Holland as the new Spiderman.

3) X-Men: Apocalypse – In Theatres Friday May 27

I remember when a few of the X-men films came out when I was younger because my brother thought Wolverine was a badass and I always wanted to tag along. However, I didn’t fully become a big X-men fan until Jennifer Lawrence joined the reboot/prequel series back in 2011 when X-Men: First Class hit theatres. Since then I’ve joined the mutant bandwagon and have thoroughly enjoyed both Days of Futures Past and the recent Deadpool release. Therefore, I’m extremely eager to see how X-Men: Apocalypse will try to outshine the other films.

Not only am I excited that Jennifer Lawrence is reprising her role as Raven/Mystique but I’m amped that she has changed over to the good side. The film focuses on the first and most powerful mutant Apocalypse, who has awoken after thousands of years of slumber and feels that the world has gone to ruin. Raven, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and the rest of the X-men mutants come together to stop Apocalypse and his four horseman of extremely powerful mutants, whose sole mission is to wipe out the human race in order to start the world over.
