This combination edition of ‘In Theatres’ features the best films of August, as well as a ton of exciting upcoming September releases! I have featured two of the films I’m most looking forward to seeing in the coming month, as well as a ton of extras if my favourite two aren’t your style.
1) Hell or High Water – In Theatres Friday August 19
Hell or High Water is a heist crime film that features Chris Pine and Ben Foster as two brothers that scheme together to rob local West Texas banks, in an attempt to save their family’s ranch. Pine plays divorced dad Toby Howard and Foster plays his ex-con brother Tanner Howard, while Jeff Bridges portrays local Texas ranger Marcus Hamilton who is tasked with hunting them down before he retires. The film seems like a cross between The Town and No Country for Old Men, so I’m eager to see who will prevail in their deadly game of cat and mouse.
2) Deepwater Horizon – In Theatres Friday September 30
Deepwater Horizon is a biographical disaster film featuring Mark Wahlberg in the lead role of Mike Williams, who is based upon a real hero from the 2010 oil rig explosion off of the Gulf of Mexico. I’m excited to see that the film has put the bravery and tenacity of the men and women upon the rig at the forefront of the storyline. I can’t wait to see how Wahlberg performs as well as the excellent supporting cast of Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien, and Kate Hudson.
- Suicide Squad (In Theatres – Fri Aug 5): is a superhero film based on the DC Comics team of antiheroes of the same name. The story follows an exceptional ensemble cast as secret government official Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) uses prisoners as her makeshift ‘Suicide Squad’ to perform special ops missions in order to save the world. Specifically, keep an eye out for Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Jared Leto as the villainous Joker.
- Pete’s Dragon (In Theatres – Fri Aug 12): is a fantasy remake of the beloved 1977 musical film about a boy raised in the forest by a magical dragon. The story follows young Pete (Oakes Fegley) once he is discovered six years after he was originally stranded in the forest. With the help of Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), Jack (Wes Bentley), and Natalie (Oona Laurence) Pete learns how to fit into a family while they all try their best to protect his magical friend from the locals.
- The Light Between Oceans (In Theatres – Fri Sept 2): is a romantic drama film based on the 2012 novel of the same name by M. L. Stedman. The story follows married couple Tom (Michael Fassbender) and Isabel (Alicia Vikander) Sherbourne after they marry and try to start a family. However, after Isabel’s second miscarriage they come across a stranded baby girl and take her in as their own. However, the plot thickens when the mother of the child comes back into the picture and Tom’s conscience begins to get the better of him.
- Sully (In Theatres – Fri Sept 9): is a biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood, which features Tom Hanks in the lead role of pilot Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. The story follows the aftermath of a flock of Canadian geese disabling the engines of a US Airways plane, and the heroic landing of the aircraft into the Hudson River by Captain Sullenberger.
- Snowden (In Theatres – Fri Sept 16): is a biographical political thriller film featuring Joseph Gordon Levitt in the lead role of CIA computer expert Edward Snowden. The story follows Snowden as he uncovers a disturbing breach of public privacy by the National Security Agency, and his consequential fight to disclose this information to the public.
- Bridget Jones’s Baby (In Theatres – Fri Sept 16): is the third romantic comedy film of the franchise featuring Renee Zellweger in the lead role of Bridget Jones. Colin Firth reprises his role as ex-boyfriend Mark Darcy, while Patrick Dempsey appears for the first time as billionaire Jack Qwant. After a one night stand with each man, Bridget finds herself in a dilemma as she is pregnant and unsure of who the father is.
- The Magnificent Seven (In Theatres – Fri Sept 23): is a western action film remake of the film of the same name from 1960. The story is set shortly after the Civil War, and focuses on the residents of Rose Creek during their attempt to fight off Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) by enlisting the help of seven outlaws. The film is packed with incredible talent as the ensemble cast features Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio.
