This month’s edition of ‘In Theatres’ features October’s best new releases including exciting book-to-film adaptations, remakes, heart-pounding thrillers, and long awaited sequels. As usual I have featured the films I am most eager to go and see this month, as well as a bunch of extras if my picks aren’t your style.

1) The Girl on the Train – Friday October 7th

The Girl on the Train is a mystery drama film that is based on the novel of the same name by Paula Hawkins. The story follows Emily Blunt in the lead role of Rachel Watson who is an alcoholic that is picking up the pieces of her life after she divorces her husband for cheating on her. Each day she commutes to New York and watches the lives of the members of her old neighbourhood from the train. One day she witnesses something that flaws her fantasy, which leads to her an alcoholic black out causing her to lose her memory of the night’s events. She then finds out that a woman from the neighbourhood has gone missing, and she begins to relentlessly try to put back the pieces.

If Emily Blunt is a favourite of actress of yours, check out this previous CCC blog post that features her exceptional performance in Sicario as well as several other impressive roles.

2) The Accountant  – Friday October 14th

The Accountant is an action thriller film that features Ben Affleck in the lead role of Christian “Chris” Wolff. The story follows Wolff, a public accountant from a small town, as he secretly cooks the books for massive criminal organizations. I am excited to see Affleck in such a calculated and methodical role, while I’m also eager to see how J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick perform in their supporting roles.

3) Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – Friday October 21st

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is an action thriller film that is the sequel to the 2012 film Jack Reacher featuring Tom Cruise in the lead role. The story picks up four years after the first film and follows Reacher as he returns to his old military unit’s HQ. Upon arrival he is accused of a decade old murder and consequently must investigate the crime in order to clear his name. I’m excited to see Cruise reprise his role as  badass Jack Reacher, and I’m interested to see what Cobie Smulders will bring to the table as they work together to uncover what is sure to be a multi-layered conspiracy!
